History of Magik Clothing Alteration Services

Magik Clothing Alterations is Australia and New Zealand’s tailor, the largest brand in the tailoring industry. Annual turnover in excess of 25 million a year, services nearly one million customers and 1,000 retail fashion stores including the likes of David Jones, Myer, Lisa Ho, Gianni Versace and Country Road.

Founded in 1994 by Abraham and Maissa Hatoum, Magik Clothing Alterations was originally City Wide Alterations. The concept was born out of personal research which showed that most tailors were often inconveniently located, either in some high rise or from a garage. Prices, quality and service was extremely varied and customers were waiting weeks for simple pant hems. At the time, they were excited about the thought of being city wide, and never dreamt of the international coverage they have today.

Magik Clothing Alterations has reinvented tailoring in Australia. Today, Magik Clothing Alterations are conveniently located (mostly in shopping centres), consistent in pricing, service, quality and turn around time. Shortening pants or repairing garments is only a small part of the services, with Magik Clothing Alterations being trained and focused on ensuring the perfect fit through custom tailoring and their unique understanding of fashion and styling.

The success of this approach has buoyed the businesses growth and its size, locations and quality of service has attracted large contracts such as the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games to alter the garments for thousands of athletes, dignitaries and officials from around the world! Other corporate clients include NBC, IBM, the Australian Customs Service and the Department of Finance and Administration in the NSW Government.

The business has fast become an Aussie favourite, with Magik Clothing Alterations recommended by Bessie Bardot and named her favourite tailors in her book “Bessie’s guide for girls who want more from life”. Magik Clothing Alterations was also chosen by The Australian Newspaper’s Small Business Editor Peter Switzer as one of the 70 most successful businesses of the last five years.

2007 was a milestone year, marking a re-brand exercise worth over two million dollars. This included taking the group from CityWide to Magik Clothing Alterations, new state of the art Point of Sale software, stylish and high quality shop fittings, marketing and promotional programs. Growing at a rate of almost 1 shop a fortnight, 24 new branches were added that year alone, including international expansion into New Zealand. The future holds more local and international expansion and the continued development of Magik Clothing Alterations’s role in the retail and fashion industries.
